Default '76 Alarm Problem

When the key has been turned to set the alarm (doors locked and hood closed), the alarm horn immediately sounds off. I can't seem to find much in the archives or anywhere else so any help would be appreciated.

Jud the 76 alarm is pretty much just like the 72 alarm, except for 1 more switch added to the key switch. The system operates by a switch grounding out and tripping the alarm. One of your switches is tripping or going to ground when its not supposed to most likely.
The first switch I look at on a 76 is the anti-tamper switch that protects the fender key switch,in the link below.
http://willcoxcorvette.com/product_i...ducts_id=24165

The above diagram is for a 72 and doesn't show the anti-tamper switch.

Haven't had a chance to diagnose the problem yet but I'm reading that when the alarm is triggered, not only does the horn blow but the lights flash on and off. Can someone confirm this on a '76. Obviously only the tail lights would be affected, I guess, as the head lights would be normally under their covers.

I don't think the lights flash but I'll check the diagrams I have and see.

I don't see the lights tied in with the system.
The diagram I was looking at doesn't even show the anti-tamper switch,I'm pretty sure the 76 has the tamper switch.

I had the exact same problem a couple of weeks ago. Finally found out that the passenger side door switch was not being depressed far enough when the door was closed. There is a square rubber pad on the door that depresses the switch and this pad has a very deep indentation, probably from old age.
Anyone know where these pads can be purchased??

I did check each switch by holding it in all the way while a partner turned the alarm on. Since the horn still sounded, I guess this eliminates this type of problem. I plan on testing the anti-tamper switch this AM as Roger suggests. Thanks very much for your input, Steve.

Jud , if your car "has" the anti-tamper you can just unplug it and it will be removed from the system, same with all the switches , unplugging them removes that path to ground.
Let us know what you find.

Everytime I look at that electrical diagram of the alarm system, I get more and more confused. I sure would love to see that diagram in a "ladder" format.

This diagram is from an early 77 but should be much closer.
Jud , notice the white wires, those are the ones that when they go to ground will trigger the alarm.

Apparently the anti-tamper switch is the problem. When disconnecting the electrical plug from it, it basically split in half, totally fubar. With the switch disconnected, the alarm appears to operate normally. Thanks for all the help, especially Roger. Jud

I installed a new anti-tamper electrical switch ($25 from Zip) and this solved the problem. Thank you gentlemen.

I took the horn out of mine, it would randomly go off, and the horn was about dead, sounded like a bunch of geese locked in my car, very embarrasing

Hi gents , I have a 76 that I just bought, my horn was all rusted and did not work for the alarm so I replaced it. But my alarm system still doesn't work.? .. My hazards work fine my blinkers work fine, my regular horn word fine.. I can't seem to figure out what's wrong with it or how to get it to work, can anyone point me in the right direction ? And where to locate some of the fuses and relays for the alarm system ... ? Please ?
