The clip that holds in the drivers side yolk to half shaft is comming out is this a common problem . Thanks for any help is this clip the only thing that holds the wheels to the dif.
68 ,327. would a sway bar help.
thanks,Anthony
If you are talking about the snap ring inside the differential then yes that is what holds the yoke in. I just removed my dif and one of the clips was missing. The yoke slid right out.
the dif is comming out again tomorow the mecanic wants to cut the gruve a little deeper and use a different clip. I think there must be something wrong causing pressure on the clip. This car is killing me
I have the same problem.
Yoke at passenger side came out.
I took the diff out for dismantling and inspection.
The C-clip was laying in the diff unharmed. grooves looks fine as well.
The shaft for the spider gear have signs of contact with both yokes.
At the moment I'm trying to figure out how the remove the posi springs in a good manner, and not having them flying out.
Anyone here with a great tip of how to remove those springs?
If the yokes are worn down there is nothing to do but replace them. I have some pictures of worn yokes and recutting the groove will not help the situation. Sometimes it is cheaper in the long run to do it right.
Having a clip missing from a side yoke can be an issue as the rear of your vette will not be stable while driving on a curvy road. I know from experience. While you have it apart, why not install new yokes and eliminate the problem.
does the car make ant weird noises when this happens?
I have a 68 327/4 speen and I am getting a knocking at slow 10 mph speeds. Both half shafts and drive shafts are new.
Thanks
Ed
I had the gear changed from 308 to 355 mech said bearings were bad in trailing arms and bushing bad on drivers side. I said change what ever, diff shop said one yoke bad thats why clip came out I said change it.Mech (good friend) test drove car making noise after 10 min back on lift clip out again noise in rear spacer chued up, rear out again. but to answer your question I had a noise once in a wile before I touched anything and I think it was from the wheel bearing in the trailing arm
We rebuild a few of these a week.
Maybe one out of 30 units that are sent in by customers because the snap rimg came off. Examination of these stub axles shows generally the grove is not deep enough or square and or the snap ring feels not quiet 'tight' as a new snap ring so the snap ring does not seat quite right.
Before putting any stub axle back in always check the snap ring for fit. We have re machined the grove on the lathe and never had one come back.
We generally recommend replace replacement stub axles with hardened tips. (These come with new snap rings)
