Default Second Opinion on a 383 Engine Build Sheet??

G'day, Thinking of putting together a 383 for my '64. Could use a second opinion if I'm on the right track. Below is the background and parts list.

The Car and UsageThe car is a ’64 Corvette coupe, 4 speed wide ratio transmission. 3125 curb weight. Professionally built differential, using a 373 gear ratio. Long Tube Headers – 1.5 inch Diam. 2.5 inch flow through exhaust (no cats, no crossover - yet). 26 inch tall tires.
It’s used on weekends of which 40% of that time is on the drag strip (usually bracket racing on an eighth mile). Not a daily driver. But still needs to be streetable.
Goals:
383ci, 500hp at the crank, shift point @ 6000rpm, limited @ 6500rpm, pump gas (petrol available is 92, 95, or 98 Octane, E10 is 94.). Not a budget build but neither is it an all out heart-stopper.

I think I want to have:(DCR 8-8.5 This may mean 10.5 CR for Alum heads)

500fwhp goal

Unless your machinework is free-of-charge or you already have a prepped block ...

Perhaps you'd be ahead in both money and power if you began with a DART SHP 400 ShortBlock (new block, crank, rods, pistons & bearings).

CF member Jim "427Hotrod" used one last year & penned article about it.

TQ is what can drop your time a couple of 10ths. When I was doing the 11.70's in my Vette similar build with 3.875 strokers for 396 ci we doing 11.40 - 50's at the all corvette drags.

I have never built another 383. They are nothing. Everybody has them.

The cam. the rule is. when you have big flowing heads you need less cam. http://www.lunatipower.com/Product.aspx?id=1990&gid=289 is out of bounds for a little 383 with 195 E heads

with your choices of fuel. 64 or so cc with flat tops. your headers are to small for the heads. look at the head port size.

With that combination and your goals, I'd use a larger intake manifold such as the Edelbrock Performer RPM Intake Manifold. Also, I'd swap the carb for a 800 mechanical secondary carb, which has the same primary size (same driving characteristics, but less restriction at WOT).

For pushrods, you'll need to measure after the long block is assembled - too many variables otherwise.

Default Thanks for the imput....

I looked at the new after-market blocks but for a couple reasons I'll stay with the older version at this time. I'm not real comfortable selecting the cam. I contacted Lunati about that cam. They said it would work fine. Could you give me a part number of another one that I could investigate????

Cheers.

Bud, is that pic of the red one the 64 you are building the engine for? Man, that car is nice. I'd hate to see it get all torqued up over time as good as it looks.
I'll send you a c3 and an engine or two and trade you for it. Ok, I'll throw in my dog and a couple cool guns ( oh, can you have them?)

Default G'day Julian

Yup, the 383 is going into the '64. As with a lot of cars, pictures don't show the true story. It's a nice car but it's far from a NCRS Top Flight candidate. I don't want to see it buggered up either and I'll try not to but the funny thing is my life-style leads me this way. I work 7 nights a week (wifes' restaurant) and in my own shop 5.5 days a week (jeweller). Wife gets motion sickness real bad so no tours or even short trips. I enjoy the mechanics of the corvette hobby. So if I didn't have the goal of racing on the strip, the car simply wouldn't get out of the garage! I love this car but I gotta have some fun too.

Thanks for the offer tho, but no guns allowed here. We can't even carry sharps (knives) without due cause - as in work related not protection. You could call our state a 'Nanny State' and not many people would disagree.

Now get off the computer and get back working on my block!

You will be over 500 HP & 6500 RPM racing. Look at a quality forged bottom end.
Here is a great 396 kit. Add internally balanced. With the 75cc AFR 195 eliminators your at about 10.5 to 1.

I agree cam is too big. This one with your 1.65 rockers and efficient exhaust will work well and be right under 8.5 DCR.

Default Decisions, Decisions

Seems I'm on the border of everything. Most of the gear is set up for 6000rpm and 500hp. So I'm either overdoing it on some things and in danger of breaking others. The bottom end is supposedly rated at 500. With my 1.5 inch exhaust and dual plane intake I'm expecting to maybe make 500. This isn't an all out build, that's one of the reasons I'm staying with the seasoned block. I'm just trying to get the most out of the tires and diff I've got on.

I'll look into that other cam. Thanks for the lead.

Time to shift over to the restaurant job - I can hear the wife calling!
