High Volume Oil Pumps
Is it possible to use a high volume oil pump with the stock oil pan? I have tried to use one I ordered from Summit and the pickup was tack welded on and it was the wrong pickup. I went to the local speed shop and bought one without a pickup and thought I would use my pickup. Well, that don`t work either. The body of the pump hits the oil pan before the pan seats.

NO!! I have been down that road twice. Under hard acceleration, it will suck the pan dry. I blew the motor in my streetrod years ago while racing a Kawasaki. It blew do to oil starvation. The oil does not drain back down into the pan fast enough to keep up. Oh well, At least I won the race :D
If you do run the high volume pump, run at least a seven quart pan.
Also, get the rear baffle the goes between the oil pump and rear main. It keeps oil from climbing up the rear of the pan under hard acceleration.
One other thing. Be prepared to replace the lower bushing in your distributor every so often. I destroyed my shaft and bushings on both Mallory distibutors that I run in my Vette and streetrod. The additional lateral thrust caused by the stress of turning the high volume pump is very hard on the lower distributor bushing and drive gear.
