Default 74 350 running hot

just bought my dad a 74 vette for fathers day. today i picked it up while my dad was at work and drove it for a while to test it out. it was running a little hot and almost redlined when i was at WOT merging on to the freeway. when i got home i popped the hood and noticed the fan shroud seemed really small. on all the cars i have seen, the shroud covers all the fan or at least most of the fan

the shroud on the vette seems small and i think that is why it is getting hotter than normal, anyone have a pic of the fan and shroud for reference? it has a new water pump, fan, fan clutch, and thermostat. the radiator was also cleaned by a radiator shop so all i can really think of is the shroud.

Post a pic of what you have now.

There is a plastic shroud and an extension to the shroud covering the fan.

The metal one on my 71 dosent cover the whole radiator but it gets up to 180 and thats with the air on.Check your coolant level and make sure its full.By the way that was a nice thing you did.

Here's a pic of the fan and shroud

The coolant level is full, I'm going to take out the thermostat and see if that's the problem, I have a feeling it is a dud because the motor gets hot fast and when at high rpm. I have a feeling the thermostat might be stuck closed

Oh and the temp gauge, I'm assuming is the original one and reads half way from 200 degrees and the red area. So it's definitely hotter than ideal operating temp I'm guessing

I would try a new 180* thermostat first. Inexpensive first go at the problem.

FYI, ambient here today is 80*F and my temp gauge ran 180*F on the go and 200*F in city traffic (A/C not on).

The fan should be half inside of the shroud. Someone probably put in the wrong water pump. You need a long pump.

Looks like you have the proper shroud but are missing the shroud extension. Looks like you have the proper vette water pump.
Some came with a 7 blade fan.
It may be the angle of the pic, but the fan looks too high to fit inside the shroud with an extension.

Check your temps with a temp gun on the tstat housing for an accurate result first, then worry.

Make sure you have the right fan first. The one in the pic is? Noonie alluded to this.

Worth cheking some other things before spending money. What is your timing? Is it hot only at highway speeds or does it also creep up when you are stopped?

Ouch,$175 for the fan extension. Isn't there a cheaper option?
Really nice thong you did for your dad by the way.

Haven't checked the timing because we just got it and haven't had the time to go over things yet. It gets hot when at high rpm around town, I drove it on the freeway once but only got half a mile untill I hit traffic so I can't report the temp reading of highway speed lol Ill probably consider making an extension, I got some stuff laying around, if it doesn't work I have a friend who works at a hardware store so I got the discount if I buy some aluminum hahaha

Just tried to check the timing on it but my timing light doesn't work anymore, I'll see if I can buy another one later today after school. But regarding the fan clutch it is brand new, so unless it's defective I think the fan clutch is fine, is there a way to test it?

Purchase the 74 assembly instruction manual (AIM) before you spend any further money. The AIM shows the correct stock shroud, the original GM part number for it, how it installs - including the shroud and radiator support seals, AND whether or not it had an extension ring.

All 74s had fiberglass shrouds. No steel. The extension may be AC or AT only. The correct thermostat is 195 degrees.

If it was 95 outside and your were WOT on the freeway, she may not have been running hot at all.

No sense tossing money at parts you may not need.

Lots of good B&W underhood pics here.
