Default 68 Ammeter flapping

Hi everybody!

I just installed a new radio in my 68 Corvette, since i had to remove the center console anyway i took the opertunety to change the needle in my Ammeter. The needle were broken wene i got the car.

My Ammeter needle is centerd when the car is shut off, when i start it up the needle starts to go from right to left quite a bit, especially when the car is idle.

At higher rpm`s and while driving it starts to even out a little.

Is this normal for the Ammeter to act this way?

Have the alternator checked for a bad diode.
