Default Trans. Crossmember

I'm getting ready to put new exhaust on my '71. My question is would it make sense to put a connector flang on both pipes one in front and on after the trans. crossmember, so you could unbolt the pipes and crossmember if you have to pull the transmission without cutting the exhaust.

Yes and no. Yes for the convience of pulling the tranny. No because it seems the header flanges start leaking quickly. The transmission shops drop the entire exhaust system from the manifolds to the mufflers WITH the crossmember when they pull a T350 or 400. No cutting. However, this would be an ideal time to put in an "H" crossover or Dr. Gas.

Years ago I addressed this issue. I didn't want my exhaust passing through the 2 holes and pressed up against the transmission so i did something about it. I filled in the holes , re-enforced the area around 2 cutouts I made under the crossmember. I also used camaro headers that came straight out so my exhaust passes well away from the transmission. I can easily disconnect the header flange and drop the entire exhaust system.

I put flanges in a Dr Gas X right after the transmission, followed by two weld on flanges right before the differential. It's great if you ever need to work on the transmission or rear suspension. I am very happy with the flanges, and the X as well. I also have a tube crossmember which allows the exhaust to go under instead of through (from BTO).
