Default Help with clock

Okay, my clock doesn't work on my '70 (do any of them???) and I have the replacement kit for the "guts" of the clock. But, the instructions are terrible and don't provide any information (or pictures). I have the clock removed from the car, but I'm not even sure how to remove the hands to get to the main case to replace the guts. Anyone have a similar problem? How do you remove the hands to get started?

Thanks.

The hands are just pressed onto the shaft. BE VERY VERY VERY CAREFUL!. Once the hands are removed you CAREFULY bend the tabs on the face so you can remove the face of the clock. They are tender so be careful. There may be a screw on the back of the clock that needs to be removed for the back to separate from the workings, I don't recall at this time. I managed to get my clock working by spraying WD40 in it. Just gummed up. Next step would be to get the rebuild kit.
Assembly is just the reverse. The hands will press back on the shaft. just be sure of the clearance between the hands as I had them getting caught.
Hope this helps

Thanks...I got the hands off. I was afraid to pull to much because it kept feeling like the hands would break. But, like you said you have to be VERY CAREFUL. I have it all put back together and ready to go.

Yep...the hands just press on. If the instructions just say to remove the hands, then that's just what you do. I rebuilt my clock with the a quartz unit which has a simulated electric movement. As I recall I used my thumbs on both sides of the open area of the first clock hand (minute) and pried it up that way. I think the clock hand under that (hour) had a tang which holds it in, so I used a jewelers screwdriver to pry it up enough to slide it off.

The face itself is held on by tangs in the back which you must pry up...if you are carefull you will be able to return the tangs to their original position to hold the face on when you are finished installing the new guts. After that it's a matter of choosing the correct gears so the new guts will interface properly with the old face and hands...my kit had several gears to choose from, and the instructions were a little fuzzy, but basically there were two clocks installed between 68 and 82...you will be able to tell which one by the number of teeth in the gears.
