Default 350 engine timing

Timing my 350 L 48 vett Suppose to be 8 degrees at 800 rpm right.
Now question is while the disturber line plug the rpm is suppose to be 800 ?? Then set timming to 8 degress. Seems a little fast idle after I plug in vacume line

Default 12 Degrees

If your car is an Automatic OR MANUAL, timing is supposed to be 12 degrees BTDC (Advanced).

Timing is set at IDLE (600 for Automatic / 900 for Manual), with the vacuum advance line removed.

Agreed - 900 seems fast (manual trans), but that's what the book says.

It's normal for the idle to increase when you plug the vacuum advance back in as it adds more timing. If the spec for your car is indeed 8* @800 rpm, just reduce the idle speed as the final step.

I have a 76 L48 small block that came with the 2-1-2 and pellet cat converter. Factory timing then was supposed to be 6-8 degrees tdc to retard it for pollution. It no longer has the exhaust, true duals and tuning it correctly now means I run it at 13 degrees tdc and have the recurve kit to change the springs and weights on the HEI to get the power curve all in advance in at closer to 2500 rpms than 4500 rpms or so. Engine runs smoother at 13 degrees tdc. I set it at warm engine, idle speed with vacuum advance unhooked and plugged. Tightened bolt then double checked, hooked it up to vacuum again then checked it while I was there and ran the engine speed up to check that the total advance was kicking in. Don't know how to check total advance but subsequent driving was very smooth, no "pinging"...I use 92-93 premium gas....and I'm happier now than when it was set to factory settings which sucked just like the EPA.
