I just picked up this 78 vette and for the most part I am really happy with the cars condition. I did notice though that 2nd Gear doesnt seem right, 1st, 3rd, 4th, and reverse are very solid but second doesnt feel good at all. It isnt so bad when I shift from 1 to 2, just kinda thuds going in, not smooth but really not too bad, its really bad though going from 3rd to 2nd, its basically impossible to downshift this way, all other gears downshift just fine but 3 to 2 is bad, i basically end up slowing to about 10-15 before I can get it to go in without a really bad grinding noise happening. It sounds basically like I m trying to shift without putting in the clutch, but I assure you the clutch is to the floor. Any thoughts? Rebuild? I know it has to be fixed but I am not to savvy on the 4 speed internals and would have to take it to a professional, I just want to be prepared so i dont get worked over. thanks for any advice in advance!
Sounds like a synchronizer.People like to ****** second gear.
Rebuild time, but before you do, check the adjustment of the shifter. If it's an L-82, it would have a Borg Warner ST-10 not a Muncie. I believe some of the L-48 powered cars also may have used a Saginaw trannie but no Muncies.
i'm sure its a muncie, got under there and looked at the case and found the serial numbers and the 7 bolt cover. I assume the original tranny was removed and replaced with this muncie. Anyone know of any good shops on the East coast that will rebuild this thing right?

My 79 L-82 does the same thing. I guess a rebuild is in my future. But in the mean time, when I want to down shift from 3 to 2, if I move the shifter just slightly towards 1st, it will then shift fairly smoothly into second.
