If anyone has been able to put a 383ci engine under a standard hood (not the L88 or even the LT1) could you provide any information (pics also) about what parts were used to gain the clearance etc.
A vendor gave me partnumbers for an intake manifold, carb and drop filter that would work in my 72. That being said, I am still not convinced I am going to be able to do a 383 without swapping out the hood to at least an LT1 style.
There are many combinations that people have tried and made to work. If you run a search on "hood clearance manifold" you should get a good number of the threads on the subject.
A 383 is just a small block; no bigger than any other small block. The block won't give you hood clearance problems. The induction system you choose to put on top of the 383 could make a difference.
The application charts will tell you if the manifold will fit your car what they do not tell you is if a carburetor / manifold combination will fit. The electric chokes on some aftermarket carburetors require a spacer for the air filter to clear the choke housing and that can cause clearance issues.
I run a Performer RPM, 1 inch spacer, and a Holley 4150 by using a 3 inch K&N with a drop base under a standard hood. No problems that I can tell. Hope this helps.
