Default New member needs turn signal help

Hi everyone, I'm Jeff from Minnesota (never would have guessed that, right?). I just bought my first Corvette, a 1979 L-48. White/Red with 34,000 miles. It's a sweetheart of a car. I also have a 1969 SS Camaro that is feeling a bit jealous right now due ot the attention the Vette is getting.

In the first few days of ownership I've replaced the valve stem seals and rebuilt the power steering valve and cylinder - by the way, the PS rebuild project went very smoothly and wasn't difficult at all. No more leaks! I'd highly recommend that if yours leaks. I also rebuilt the power antenna.

Next on my list was the turn signals. The car has tilt, telescope, and cruise. the turn signal lever is very loose and although both right and left signals work, they only cancel about 50% of the time. Last night I pulled the wheel, removed the locking plate and expected to find that loose screw that many others mention. My screw was tight, i checked every screw I could find int here - none were loose. the cam isn't broken. In fact, everything looked good in the column. The only thing that isn't correct is the lever is loose.

I really don't care if the lever is loose, I just want the signals to cancel.

Help?

I just read another post where a member simply replaced the 2 cancelling springs although his looked fine and that fixed his problem. I think I'll try replacing those springs next and see if that helps.

The "looseness" of the turn signal lever is caused by wear in the dimmer pivot which is located in the square box on the left side of the column head. There is a crossover arm that extends from the turn signal switch to the dimmer pivot. The arm attaches to the TS switch with a single screw.

Cancelling a right or left turn is totally in the TS switch itself (such as the two small coil springs) or the cancelling cam. The dimmer pivot or a loose crossover arm might prevent the TS switch from actuating the right and left turns but not the cancelling feature.

Default switch

You might as well go ahead and replace the whole switch. You will have to replace it eventually. Less then $30 dollars at most parts stores.

And if you do order parts, order that plastic retainer clip, too. It's 5 bucks, and I got 50 bucks says yours breaks on the re install. Those things get really brittle. Ask me how i know.
