Default What's this wire??

There are 4 wires coming out of the bottom, driver's side of the distributor of my 1981 'Vette. They go to a connector that feeds them into the wiring harness on that side of the car. I just bought the car and noticed that the connector was unplugged. I'd like to know what it is before I plug it back in. Any ideas??
Thanks to all,
Bruce

Sounds like the one you disconnect to set timing.

Default I'm not so sure

I've looked at pictures on this forum for setting the timing and I don't think its that connector. This one has 4 wires.

It sounds like the dist. on my 82. Those wires are the trigger/sensor for the fuel injection, they tie into the computer. Did you or someone change the dist.? Is there the matching plug in your harness?

Default Sounds probable

Yes there is a matching plug on the harness. I just wanted to know what it was before I plugged it back in. I wonder why it was disconnected?

Default We have a problem, Houston!!

I plugged it back in; the engine fired but didn't start. Then I saw a bit of smoke near the air cleaner so unplugged the connector. Now it won't even fire when I try to start it. Damn!!!!
Any ideas??

UPDATE: I disconnected the battery, hoping that it would reset any electronics. After reconnecting, it started. I wonder what the hell happened when I plugged in the connector!!!
