Well took my car out for a drive today fired right beautiful idled great for about 5 minutes unitl we were ready to leave. Head down the driveway hit the road doing about 45 running good start down the second long hill into town and after going down hill for about a quarter of a mile the car stalls and won't restart so I coast off into a driveway sit for a minute take a quick look under the hood everything appears to be good. Try to start it and the car fires I give it gas for a minute or two everything goes back to normal... start off down the hill again another quarter mile it stalls again... Finally get it running again taking a minute or two of playing with gas to get it to idle.. This time when i pull out i run first adn second gear out hard all seems well. Make it about two miles farther down into town and she stalls out again. Try to start it and it runs for about 5 seconds and dies. Finally get it to start someone and it just sounds bogged down and wont go anywhere... End up having to call a wrecker.. get it towed home put it in the garage and fired up and runs and revs good but it seems to be ideling about 300 rpms higher then normal. I have checked for vacuum leaks but could not find any.. The motor is a decent built 454 with a 750 holly carb. What should I look at I am scared to drive it now.

 

Sounds like its running out of fuel. Check fuel filter then fuel pump flow.

 

Ha, I had the same type of day yesterday. After getting my 71 back home (on a flatbed) I noticed the rubber line to the fuel pump is kinked. I've be fighting with routing the rubber hose so that it's not bent. I'm using a Holley mechanical pump and the inlet and outlet ports don't line up like the factory pump. The symptoms were very similar to what you're describing, so I would also say it's a fuel delivery issue.
