Hey guys! I've got a pretty bad birdcage and no welding experiance, but I do have an ox/ac setup and a lot of welding and brazing rods. But I notice everyone seems to be talking about mig welding nowadays. Can I braze new parts to my cage, or weld would be better? Ox/ac would be good to use? I've got to get this project moving again, thanks for any advise you could give me
Hi JPM, I would personally use MIG weld for a number of reasons. To get started in welding skills, get one of those basic to intermediate books that will instruct on welding. MIG welding is no problem when the material is thick, it requires a bit of finesse with thinner metal such as 16 - 18 gauge or even thinner. Practice a bit and study how the original pieces were assembled and duplicate with the mig welder for satisfying results.
You can gas weld it, but Mig would be easier. If you decide to gas weld it, I wouldn't spend a lot of time in one spot, move around so the heat build up doesn't get to high in one spot. Get it spotted in several locations.
Practice and practice before you start. There is a fabricater guy on here who does really nice welding. If he is on he may have some real good advice for you.
You may want to make a jig for when you start cutting contact points. so you limit movement. Tac them in and cut them out later.
I'm doing the same thing to a 73 now. Most of the windshield has to be cut out on the one I'm doing now.
