wondering where to start looking. on my way home my speed-o-meter stopped working. the odometer and trip meter are still operational. where should i check first?
thanks
My first thought was speedo cable, but as I read further, and you say the odometer still works, then that means the cable is still functional. Something is wrong with the speedo itself. That's all I have for ya, maybe somebody else can elaborate.
For the odometer to be turning the first worm is turning...
This tells me something is either binding up the speed cup or the needle is bent and hitting the face.
There is a jewel bushing in the front that could have come loose but you'd be hearing noise if this were the case. If you look at the jewel plate you'll see the little brass cup bushing below.
Really this is just the opposite of what the problems usually are.
Do you hear any noise?

It has to be something wrong with either the speed cup or the needle.
The cable direct drives the first worm and magnet (A).
For the odometer to work, the first worm has to be turning.
The speed cup has a spindle through it that the needle is pressed on to. This spindle also comes out the bottom and floats in the bushing in the end of (1)
You said bounced... all the way to the right? The speedo may have slammed the needle and bent it. This could happen if the first worm bushing was wearing out. To explain this a little further, the first worm bushing in most cases is the culprit of speedometer failure. If the bushing gets enough play in it the first worm which normally magnetically drives the speed cup actually ***** enough to touch it. When this happens it can slam the needle and sometimes it will bend or break it off.
Still I'm not sure what the problem is, but the speedo will need to come out.
the bounce was a 5mph flux. not a major slam to one side. then slowly went to zero. do yu think this is something that i can repair? or a shop? or will i have to replace it?
thanks

You can not do this repair at home, I'm sorry you'd need to send it in.
