The ignition lock cylinder on my 76 (4 spd) does not require a key (I do have the keys) to start the car, and does not roll back into the off/lock position. It feels like something is jammed or holding it back while trying to turn the switch to the off/lock position.
I am sure I need to change the ingition lock cylinder, is there anything else I should troubleshoot prior to this?
Finally, my tach does not work. Any ideas? Thank you.
There should be a cable that runs from the trans up to a lever on the steering column just below the brake booster. If the cable is missing or not adjusted the lever can't travel to full up and allow the lock cylinder to turn to lock.
The tach most likely is the tach filter (that's the cheapest fix) it's mounted on the intake just to the left of the distributor.
All you ever wanted to know about the General Motors Steering Column/Transmission Shift Interlock System (and more!) In Microsoft Word format. Sorry I haven't had time to convert it to pdf format and post it.

Hi Jim. Just want to pass on a big thank you for your attachment. It was as simple as putting the car in reverse and turning the key into the lock position. Cheers.
