Remove the filler door and rubber 'boot', 3 fuel hose connections, electrical plug and screws attaching the sending unit/fuel pump to the top of the tank. To lift it out you'll have to rotate and angle as necessary to get the pump/float arm out thru the hole. Not hard at all.
I pulled mine to fix the fuel level sender and replace the rubber hose to the fuel pump. No real problem. I don't think dropping the tank is going to help much.
I had to replace mine 2 years ago. It looks impossible, but it actually does come out with minimal effort. The hardest part was removing, and re-attaching the fuel supply/return hoses. The space between the body and the tank is pretty tight.
You can get it out through the filller area. I did un do the tank straps, and was able to shift the tank side to side to help align the sending unit to the hole in the body. Tape up your paint or you will have a new problem.
