Default 5 speed Richmond install

Well I got my 5 speed installed yesterday, and much to my surprise it was basically a bolt and go operation, The tranny is a 5 speed Richmond Road Race version with a 3.28/1 first gear and 5th is 1/1. I am running a 3.08/1 rear screw and with this trans now my first gear is like having a 456/1. The setup came with a new Long shifter, and I must say I am impressed with how it functions, much better that the Hurst shifters I have had over the years. The only fabricating I had to do was to the transmission bracket that bolts to the frame. cut 2 1/8 inches out of it, weld it back together and bolt it in.

So it's thumbs up for the new setup

That's great news, especially about the Long shifter, as a Richmond 5-speed is pretty high on my wishlist. A dog box might suit me, but I'm taking a hard look at the Richmond SS 5 w/2.89 1st and .77 5th because would match up so well with my 3.55:1.

I have a Doug Nash 5 speed, which is the original Richmond, in my 'other' car and it's awesome! Same 3.28 first and 1:1 fifth. I know it would be perfect for my Vette...

I believe there are some fitment issues with the Richmond 5 speed overdrive version. Different case.

I don't know why so many others don't consider a Richmond. I have one in the 65 with a 3:08 rear. Great gear ratios for that rear. It's a close ratio 5 spd and fun to drive. I also agree with you on the Long shifter. I tried a Hurst first and it is no where near as nice as the Long.

The overdrive tranny is the same length as the Road Race 5 speed but the mount is further back, the trans bracket has to be modded anyway so the fit should be close to the same.

Phil, did you have to change your driveshaft (or shorten it) for the Richmond?

I used the stock driveshaft in the 65. I did have to uses a dual sized u-joint at the trans end. The Richmond uses a T400 yoke.

I did the same thing in my 68 but used the 6 speed. 3.28 1st, 0.76 6th with a 3.08 rear. Puts a smile on my face every time I start it.

Good news I was thinking of going with Keilser's new RS, but as I drove Keilser Tremec and really did not like it I was not sure. I have always wanted a Doug Nash, aka a Richmond ....!

It will be on my Xmas list for sure.

Does the richmond come with any gearing options? I have a stocker 350 with a 4 speed and 3.70 reargears. I cant see myself changing the motor much, but dont know what transmission gear splits are best.

Advice?

Yes. In addition to the 2.89 1st I mentioned in post #4, the SS 5/OD Richmond is also available with 3.33 or 3.06 1st's. Good rule of thumb is to go with the one which is nearest 10:1 when multiplied by your rear gear ratio. In my case 2.89 x 3.55 = 10.26. In your case 2.89 x 3.70 = 10.69. I've gone deeper on the street, but can't recommend doing so.

You've got about a half dozen 1st and 6th gear ratios to chose from.
