Default speaking of loping...

I'm in the process of buying (gave a small down payment) a 79'. The engine was rebuilt about 3k miles ago although I don't have all the info yet on what all was put in it. Owner did say a new cam, pistons, etc. When I get to his house to see car and he starts it up I notice the idle seems pretty high to my ear, about 1300 - 1500 rpm. I asked why it was so high and he immediately reduced the idle to about 1000 rpm and tells me that "loping is bad for the cam" So should I be leery of his comment? I didn't care if it loped or not but just thought the idle was too high.....

At 3000 miles everything should be broke in. If I were concerned about his comment I would simply ask him to explain himself, then if satisfied proceed w/ the sale, good luck and welcome to the club!

Smells like BS or maybe he is just misinformed. If it was a solid roller, yes, street idle can be hard on the solid roller lifters. Find out the cam and spring info and what kind of oil he has been using. An aggressive cam with high spring rates needs an oil high in ZDDP.
