I have 245/60/15 tires they dont make anymore (go figure) on my 1979 vette. Those are really hard to find so I decided to go with 255 instead. I want the bfgoodwrich radial t/a's but no one seems to have 4 of them. Any other suggestions? Id be embarrassed with the firehawks but dont want to pay out the nose either. A lot of places tout they have whatever tires til you go and search and find they dont.
P255/60R15 is the correct size for your car. There are a number of retailers selling them. Besides the BFG and Firehawks, there is the Cooper Cobra, the Dunlop GT Qualifier, Pep Boys sells their Futura GLE (a clone of the Cooper Cobra made for them), as well as other brands.
I won't pass judgement on which is the superior tire...that's a can of worms and we all have our own likes and dislikes.
Try several retailers that are local to you as well as online sellers like TireRack.com and compare prices and ratings.
Thanks for the insight. Not one tire store new or used carries the tire size I need its insane. Tire rack only has the cooper, Im so tired of searching for these when the internet says "oh yeah we have them" Then you go to order and it says "SOL are you crazy? We dont have these?"
In 79, the standard was 225/70/15 (blackwall or raised white letters). It is my understanding that if the car came with the QBS= 255/60/15 that the lip of the fender was trimmed.
If yours is not trimmed you might run into problems with the 255/60.
I just bought four 255/60/15 BFGs from TireRack a couple of months ago and they were on my doorstep 2 days later. I guess I got lucky with the timing and got them while they had in stock. It was a great deal though, even with shipping and mounting/balancing, it was still much cheaper than getting them from my local tire store.
Oh, and no rubbing issues on my '76 which is about 1" lower than stock.

Yes Im going crazy!
just so you know ... We do not carry any Cooper tires
Are you saying that you dont want Cooper tires?
If thats not what your saying, www.discounttiredirect.com shows to have Cooper Cobras in stock in 245/60R-15
Your drivers side door originally had a label on it, right by the latch mechanism. If the label is still on your door, it will list which size tire (the standard P225/70R15 or the optional P255/60R15) your 79 was equipped with when new.
I bought my 245x60x15 BFG TA's at Walmart of all places. They ordered them and I had them within 4 to 5 days? I didn't want them to lift the car, so I just took them the wheels and old tires.
I do not want cooper tires. I was told they were crap but Im only hearing this from 3 random people. What says you?
I've had several sets of Cooper tires...excellent quality. I believe most of Cooper's production is private label stuff like for Pep Boys rather than under their own name.
Only once have I been disappointed in a set of Coopers...on my daughter's car and they wore out in less miles than I expected...but I have to take her driving habits into account...lots of miles and she couldn't care less about maintenance.

HELP!
Why would you be embarrassed with Firehawks? I have them and they rate better then TA's. So go for the 255/60/15 with no worries.
