Default 68 Steering Questions

Hi there,

Im kind of new to vettes and was wondering how much pressure should be needed to push the steering cylinder rod in? Im wondering if mine is bad, almost certain it doesnt leak. My steering seems to be a bit loose feeling and Im just wondering what may be the cause without randomly replacing things. Any way to check the components? Whats the best brand components to buy If I needed to replace anything?

Thanks
Chris

with the engine off, steering unlocked and wheels straight ahead, grab the steering wheel with very light pressure and see how much side to side movement you have. If you arms are long enough you should be able to do this and watch the steering shaft at the same time. If you have a lot of play and see no movement in the coupling your steering box may need adjustment.

I was thinking more along the lines of how do you check for a bad cylinder or bad valve. If they went bad would it cause the care to feel like loose steering at higher speeds? This only happens on the freeway at high speeds forgot to mention. I gott akeep two hands on the wheel at all times. Is this normal for C3s?
