Default 79 L82 Engine prices

Hi folks. I think i F'd up real good now and may need to replace my engine. While I'm waiting for the word from my shop, how much should I expect to pay for a new or replacement engine? I want to know my price options are before I decide to go with a new or used engine.

Thanks!

You can get an very nice Vortec 350, LT4 roller cam, 400 flywheel HP engine from Year One for about $3200. You probably can't pay to have your L82 rebuilt for that.

Here's something you may be intersted in, It has the same camshaft as your L82 engine, but dished pistons and small valve heads.

Tell us a little about why you think you may need a new engine, maybe we can help you decide if it's a complete engine you need or just a short block, or a rebuild that would be your best choice.

Silver 79, try GM for a ZZ383 short block or Year One.

I recently purchased a 1980 L82 with 31,xxx miles from a member of this forum for $400. I pulled the rear main cap this weekend to install a new seal before I drop it in the hole, and the bearings (whole motor truth be told) are sooo clean it's hard to believe. Unless you NEED to drive it right now, shop around a bit... there are some great deals to be had on this forum!

short of some rare once in a lifetime stuff ... hands-down best value out there ... $2999 purchase price ... probably about $3200 to your door. YO runs em in on a real dyno & they include real dyno sheet; proves motor has all its parts & pieces and that they're operating properly.

see yearone crate CT350PC1

Can you actually get a four bolt main, forged crank crate engine for $3200.

Agree, if you can swap out to a new engine for $3000 doing the work yourself, go for it. I'd keep the original L82 though, and maybe get it back to factory specs over time. Lets face it, these cars are 30 years old, with less of them every day. With the economy picking up, starting to smell collector dollars in the air again, and 100% original's always best.

Thank you all for the replies. My shop tells me it is the engine seized up and i'll need to replace it. I wont be doing the work, so I have to add labor cost too.

ScottyP99 - So far i got a quote for a remanufactured 350 for $1,240 with a 3 yr warranty, but from the link you sent $1,900 for new might sound better. What ya think?

Markids77 - I would certainly like to get a deal you got, so maybe i will shop around.

Keep the advice coming!

What exactly siezed, and is the verdict total scrap. From the mentioned prices, think I'd go for it getting you back on the road again. Probably a short block re-using lots of your upper stuff, but nothing wrong with that. If there's some possibilities with your old block, think I'd keep it for later if you have room.

afaik ... L31 iron head 350" 5.7L vortec vin code "R" ... when installed new GM ... has cast nodular iron crank, powder metal rods, cast hypereutectic dished pistons, cast iron 1-pc rms roller block, steel roller cam, hydraulic roller lifters, iron ~64cc Vortec heads.

YearOne supplies and rebuilds 4-bolt main version; adding: Lt4 hotcam profile, 1.6:1 rockers, "clone" airgap intake and lite headwork w/porting ... for $2999 pp.

Vette5.5 - I wish i had the room to keep the original, but i dont. The shop I have it at is too busy to look at it (so i dont know exactly whats wrong with it) so now I need to find a new mechanic. Seems like everyone is too busy or on vacation all of a sudden. Kinda sucks in the height of the summer season.

All - Thanks for the suggestions. I place a wanted ad in the parts for sale/wanted section.
