I have a fresh rebuild on a 76 l-82(about 500mi.)not stock. s/r world heads-isky cam. The plate on the dampner is right on cause I checked it per Lars' tech tip. 9 to 1 cr.I should be able to burn reg. but it pings wildley when I try. Runs better with mid-grade but doesn't eliminate it completley.distributer vac-advance not working? Is there a test for this? Thanks For any replys!
Under what conditions are you pinging - highway cruising + a little throttle (like going up a hill), hard acceleration, low rpm, high rpm? This would help with the diagnosis. Is it hard starting when the engine is hot? You would have more potential pinging if your vacuum advance was working than if it wasn't.
You can test the vacuum advance unit by removing the dist. cap, then attaching a vacuum line directly to the vacuum advance unit and using a vacuum pump, or sucking on the other end to create some vacuum, and watch the rod in the distributor. I use my mouth cause I don't own a vacuum pump, and I pump my tongue on the hole to hold the pressure...it the pressure bleeds out and the rod goes down then the diaphram is leaky and needs to be replaced.
Personally I would not use anything less than premium fuel at least 92 octane. Even with 8.5:1 the fuel requirement is 91 octane. Save the regular gas for your lawn mower!. :chevy :nonod:
