Default 502 in my 68 update

Just thought Id let you know how my 502/502 crate is doing. Its not the ZZ 502 version.

I got the long block

To update, here is what was done:

Long block comes fully assembled except you must install the oil pan that comes with it (comes with P/U, dipstick); NOTE: The one that comes with it WILL not fit vettes. You must order the pan that will clear our vettes (I got thru GM per, about $130, comes w/dipstick). Comes with balancer. Heads are fully assembled that you must install. Long block comes with GM PERF Valve Covers, and flex plate for auo trans. It does not come with water pump. I paid $5900 for the long block, plus an additional $130 for the proper oil pan
IT DOE NOT HAVE A BOSS FOR CLUTCH LINKAGE. I made my own bracket, but have heard one is sold thru GM perf, although I never could find it

1.for carb/intake I installed my 68 tri power and intake rebuilt by TOM 454
2. Distributor is OEM off my 427, tach drive w/pertonix
3. Waterpump until last week was off my 427. Now running an Edlebrock aluminum Pump
4. Valve covers off my 427
5. Headman Coated Headers
6. M-22 4 speed,clutch, pressure plate, etc of my 427, 3:55 rear end
7. Starter off my 427
8. Radiator off my 427

All my 427 assec fit just fine (altenator, engine mount brackets, all hose, etc). There are mounting holes for PS/PB/AC, which I dont have

Ive got about 6000 miles on this motor now, and have driven in town, hiway and byways, to work, etc. It nevers heatsup, and has never let me down once

This motor from day one fires up easily at just above 9:1 compression. Idle is slightly lopey. Tourqe is a killer in this thing. And yes, It will pin you to the seats. And it just purrs on the highway, and never misses a beat. I like the oval port heads. Im not a rectagle port type of driver. I like stop lite to stoplite drills

Wether you are a bb or sb guy, I am totally sold on the GM Perf crate motors.
Whila I cant personnally atest to the other crate motots out there, GM has got it down

I have seen this beast, and it looks awesome. The tri-power really makes it.

Congrats John...

Awesome! $6,000 is a bit pricey for me. I'm thinking of a stock 454 from Schucks...only 1700 for long block.

John, 6000 miles already? That's almost 4 years worth for me!! :) With your old intake, valve covers, rad, etc, must look pretty much stock to the casual observer. MJ

Are you running the 427 flywheel? I thought the 502 was 454 based and needed a different flywheel than a 427/396.

John - Sounds like you've been busy lately as the mods continue ! I agree with you on the GM crates since my bowtie 454 runs great on 89 or 93 octane (although I run 93 all of the time now) and never lugs or pings like the original would have. Only thing I don't like is that they put really mild cams in them which I still plan to change this fall. :smash: Can't wait to see your 68 again at the next get together so we can melt some tires again! :D :jester :D

MELVIN, I'm a little confused about this. A 427 flywheel is a "0" balanced deal for an internally balanced engine, and the 502 is an externally balanced engine that requires counterweights on the flywheel and balancer. I know the 427 flywheel will bolt up, but your crank can't be too happy about it at speed  Am I missing something about your combo? Did you have your 502 crank internally balanced?

Flare:

Flywheel is definitley off my 427. No doubt about it. I am not aware of any internal modifications. There is absolutley no imbalance going on

I've seen non-GM BBC motors both internally and externally balanced. I think all the GM crate motors are external though.
I'm drawing a blank on which the 427 was though.

Gary, the GM 396 and 427 are internally balanced. The 454 and 502 are externally balanced.

Then why isn't that motor flying apart? Are the new Gen VI GM crate motors internally balanced?
