What is the real difference? We are rebuiding my buddys 82. Converting it to a carb. He already has a new chrome long pump. But folks say you need new pullys to run it. He is not replacing the A/C. Just the steering pump, alt., and crank. As for the steering pump, there is NO room for that pully to move foward. I thought that the only pully he would need is the pully for the water pump itself. I was thinking the new pully has a deeper dish for it to go over the pump shaft. But im hearing conflicting stories.
Actually, there are 3 SBC water pumps- short, long, and Corvette. The Corvette pump has the legs like the long one, but the snout (bearing length) of the short one. If you set all 3 on the bench the difference is obvious.

Actualy, the Corvette pump is a short pump with a longer shaft. The diameter of the shaft is also larger.
