Is a ring and pinion install kit really necessary for regearing?
I'm getting ready to have the 3.70's installed and I noticed the install kits are about $110 from Jegs. Do you think I really need this kit? The car has 73k miles on it, and the rear end is fine and makes no noises, I just wanna do a gear swap. It just seems tough to justify spending that kind of money for an install kit when the rear end seems ok. What are your guys' thoughts?

Out of curiosity, is there a 3.70 and a 3.73 gear set for the corvette rear end? I believe the original (at least on mine) was 3.70 but I see 3.73 referred to a lot.

TravMsns,
Based on my experience, I definetly recommend that you purchase the "rebuild kit" ~$89. It is Very easy to damage a bearing and or shims during disassembly. You will also find that this is not a job that you want to do twice. http://forums.corvetteforum.com/zerothread?id=193247
Fevre,
My 80-82 DANA 44 rear end came with 3.08 gears, comparible gear for the pre-79's were 3.07 gears. Like wise, 3.70's were not available for mine, just 3.73's. The pre-79's get 3.70's, as 3.73's are not offered. I don't know the details of what differences in the rearends forces these choices but I believe that's the way it is!?! Maybe someone who knows the details will chime in. If this is wrong, hopefully they will correct me.

It can be done without the whole kit but your bearings must still be good and you may need to re-shim so you will need at least some varying sizes of shims. Very close tollerences in there. I dropped my pumpkin myself and sent it out for the gear swap. Setting up the gears alone cost me $220. It might seem high but it takes time to get it right. Worth the money I guess.

Miker.. I think you have it backwards... the pre-80-82 have 308's (as in my 66 and my 70), and the 80-82's have the 307's.... 43 ring teeth and 14 pinion teeth... this is how the ratios are correctly calculated. I'm doing an 80 307 as we speak. It is original, and has 43/14 teeth.
I also have GM Parts Manuals and the gear sets are all listed. The 80-82's had 3 choices. 308 is not one of them.
However... in the aftermarket, anything is possible.
Edit: If you would like, I can scan the GM parts data and email it to you?
