I always thought they were strictly over the counter items and never came on a car ???
Some have told me they only came bare ???
I've also been told there was a long block assembly offered with these heads ???
I was also told they were good for 35 HP ???
Anyone know the truth ???
Thanks
"The angle plug 492's were never production heads. They were an over the counter head that used the same ports as the straight plug 492's (which were production heads). They were pre 292 Turbos, which were completely redesigned."
There was two versions of them some came on vettes, etc. I cant remember the #'s but the over the counter heads had one less # in casting. The over the counter ones were faulsy refered to as turbo heads.
Bought a bare set from Chevy over the counter in 1972 with the angle plug option. These 492 heads measured at 162 cc intake runner and 64 cc chambers with 2.02/1.60 valves; the heads also have an open heat riser passage from one of the inner exhaust runners to the center opening in the intake manifold (which I blocked off).
They are very good heads for 327/350s, but with porting, I used it well on a 406. However, when I replaced them with AFR 210s, the HP increased by about 50!
Crane used these castings for there (Fireball performance heads) they were ported and polished. Worked very well in their day. Strictly old school today.
