Just bought a 71 conv with a 4 spd. The speedometer was not working when I bought it, the owner said it just quit on him a few months ago. I purchased a new cable and speedo gear, installed it and now the speedo needle is jumping and the odometer is not working. Is my speedometer toast or am I overlooking something. Thanks for your help!
I had the same problem on my 79. I actually replaced the cable a few times and then discovered it was the gear inside the transmission was stripped. The gear I am talking about is where the speedo cable connects on the transmission. If you take off the cable, remove the screw the gear (some call it the bullet) will come out and the gear is on the end of that. Most of the tranny fluid will come out also I found out.
Replaced the gear and everything was fine for awhile. Same thing happened again and I think what ever drives the speedo gear on the bullet is damaged inside the tranny. Just haven't got around to investigating further.
Might also want to check to make sure the cable is not binding anywhere. Is yours connected to the cruise control and then a shorter cable to the speedo? if so, make sure the cruise control is not binding up and ruining your cable.
