Default Need engine help tonight!!!!!!!!

I have an 81 corvette and have a chance to get a 383 stroker engine out of a 70s nova. guy claims its a 383 stroker because thats what he was told. if there any sure fire ways to know if its a stroker engine and not just a 350 with 400 heads???? i am looking at it tomorrow so please help asap. thanks

If it has 400 heads pass on it. They make good door stops.

I'm afraid the only way to be certain is to measure the bore and stroke. 383 should be 4.030 Bore and 3.75" stroke.

If it has a machined 400 crank, it will have an externally balanced damper. If it does, there is no guarantee it isn't a garden variety, cast crank 400.

If you don't know the seller well enough to consider his word golden, look inside the motor. If the seller is unwilling, you make your decision.

so i would have to remove heads and measure the width of the piston holes correct? or how do i measure to be sure? thanks

No the bore is the same on the 350 as a 383 it is the stroke that is different. The 350 is 3.48 and the 383 is 3.75

Take the pan off, no clearanced 400 crank, no stroker. With the pan off you'll also see if it has the 4 bolt main. Plug the engine and crank numbers into google, it'll take you to many sites. nastyz28 is a good one.
