Default What Time Is It??

My 383 starts, idles and runs good but I'm wondering why the timing mark on the damper is off by so much? If I disconnect the vacuum line I'm at 20 degrees advanced. Blip throttle and the centrifugal advance works properly but with the vacuum line on I'm way off. The timing mark is at the 12 o' clock position on the damper. I don't think it slipped and is new. If I set the timing at 10 degrees advanced with the line off and then connect the line it doesn't run good. The engine is a mix of old and new parts. Could that cause the timing mark to be off?
Thanks

They (GM) changed the location of the timing mark in relation to the keyway. It's possible you have mixmatched the front cover timing mark and the balancer. And that is NOT an uncommon thing. Some years the timing cover tab was located so you had to look behind the water pump at about 12:00, and other years it was located about the 1:30 position on the front of the engine.

Thanks Tim
That's probably what happened. I'm not sure if I have the stock 68 timing cover with a newer balancer.
