Starting Issue

This AM I go to start the car. Starter motor spins but the car doesn't crank. My starter is about 1 month old and is remanufactured so I'm thinking that is has an issue. I remove it and take it to get it tested- it Passes. I reinstall it and same thing- starter motor works but it doesn't spin the flywheel. I remove the starter and set it on the ground. I have someone turn the key and I can see the "?????" push outward and then spin (on the starter). I look at the flywheel and don't see any missing teeth. I start wondering if the engine is locked so I turn the crank bolt - thankfully the flywheel turned too.
I am not sure where to go with this. Any ideas?

Did you use any of the shims that came with the starter? Could be just enough wear over the last month that maybe the starter isnt engaging the flywheel anymore...... The starter should have come with a couple of shims and a check rod......

Yes- I used the shims...Battery is new also.

If the starter spins, your motor is not locked up. It sounds like your bendix is not engaging into the flywheel. When you tested this off the car, is the bendix kicking out the full length of the starter shaft? If not, then the coil in the solenoid has failed or not producing enough magnetic field to pull the bendix out fully. It could also be due to a bad connection and not getting enough current to the solenoid coil. Relax on the motor, but check all aspects of the starter, including the shaft dor burs.

Does the gear on the bendix spin both ways ?

If I put a finger on it or when turning the key? Not sure exactly what you mean..

With it off the car just use your fingers and see if the little gear will turn both ways or just one. If it turns both ways the bendix is bad.

Ok- it just turns one way.

The bendix going all the way out on the starter shaft? I couldn't tell by looking at it because it happened very fast. The guy at the parts store said it was but I wasn't looking.
