Default '75 L48 Timing Questions

Had my first attempt at retiming my '75 stock auto L48 today after reading all the material I could find on this forum - thanks to all of the contributors. I tried to follow Lars' perf timing notes but have a few questions.

First of all, when running the eng rpm up to the 2500-3000 range the timing mark seemed to jump around a bit, spanning about a 6 deg spread - what would cause that?

Secondly, after setting as best I could the recommended 36* and reconnecting the vacuum advance the enging would "pop" and maybe "bang" (like backfire) when the gas was released with the rpm up in the 3000 range. I retarded to 34* and I couldn't hear any popping or banging when i released the gas while driving, but I still get it sitting in the driveway if I quickly punch the gas up. Any ideas there?

I've had this car a month from my dad and I'm learning on the job here so any advice or suggestions are appreciated.

BTW - I live in Calgary, Alberta which has an altitude of about 3600' and the car came from Victoria, British Columbia sea level

My neighbor tells me the timing mark jumping around is a worn harmonic balancer. Don't know how much of an issue that is. Maybe someone else can chime in on this.
