Default mechanical tach cable install

I have the old tach cable removed, but I'm having problems installing the new one. I bought it off corvette central and it is identical to my old cable. I transferred the nylon piece to the gauge side of my cable and it inserts into the gauge fine. However, I cannot get the housing to clip onto the gauge. It's like the cable is too long. There is a metal piece on the gauge side of the cable that separates the round cable from the square. I tried to screw this up to see if it adjusts but it won't move. Should I have to trim down a cable from corvette central? I assumed they would already be to spec. The nylon piece sticks out past the housing about a quarter to a half inch. I'm assuming the nylon piece should be inside the housing completely. The square part of the cable on the distributor side also sticks out about the same distance. Does anyone know how much I need to trim off?

In the pic I have the wire pulled out. The metal screw part goes clear into the metal part of the housing and sits on the rubber part.

U shouldnt be clipping any of that cable (the part that actually rotates) Make sure to insert it correctly into the tach. I think thats your problem.

the aftermarket/repro ones are usually too long. I have one that is good for nothing. It's about 3 inches too long.

I went back with the old one for my '73

Good luck

i snipped the cable on the gauge side and put the nylon piece back on. It fit perfect after doing that.

The red plastic piece must be from another replacement cable kit. Our cable does not require this piece and would install correctly without it.
