I am in the process of removing my old VIR and replace it with a VIR eliminator kit. Before even getting started, I noticed that my old VIR has five lines on it and the new VIR Eliminator has 4 connections. Any ideas on hooking this thing up? This is my first attempt of working on a AC system and some step by step instruction would be extremely appreciated.
I just finished eliminating the vir eliminator kit from my 76.
My eliminator kit had 5 connections, I am working out of town and going from memory (not always smart) but I think it went like this
3 lines connected to the metering block. One line is the really small line (1/8" or so) that comes from the evaporator.
2 lines connected to the drier
I couldn't get vent temps below about 55f with r134 and didn't want to change the condensor. I also didn't like the cycling compressor with my weak L48. Doesn't matter now I got a big block.
I have a 71 with r12 that blows 46 to 48f vent temps so I am converting my 76 also.
Both cars needed new seals in the ac boxes to blow strong and not leak air under the dash. Also both cars had lots of leaves, acorns, etc in the ac box next to the evaporator severely restricting air flow. The old seals were in bad shape and were leaking hot air from the heater core side into the ac side. If yours doesn't blow cold or hard you might need to replace the ac box seals.
Thanks for the help! Yep, in 1977, there are two versions - a "Early" and a "Late". The Early version did include a VIR. By the way, after the post explaining the hook up, I did notice a very small port with a plug... thanks again.
