I was thinking to myself while driving the other night that the rpm's seemed really really high. I don't have a tach or a speedo but it was a rough guess. I jacked it up today and the driveshaft spun exactly 4 times for one spin of the tire. I have 25 inch tall tires and in fourth gear a can feel my teeth rattling from the high rpm's. I just punched that into the dragstrip plus program and it said "TOO MUCH GEAR".
DOES ANYBODY HAVE A SIX SPEED THEY WANT TO GIVE ME??
It could be 4.11 :D Or maybe 3.90. Got access to a GPS? You can do an accurate analysis based on the speed a GPS tells you you are going at, compared with RPM, tire size, and estimated slip. Run it in a few different gears at the same speed (or different speeds).
Hi
Best method is the one you tried, mark both tires and turn the drive shaft.
If both tires have done exactly 1 full revolution ( with the back on jacks ), you will see exactly if you have 3.90 or 4.11.
Watching RPM versus speed relies on accuracy of your indications.
I agree, both this ratios are too much gear for a 1 to 1 4th gear.
I have 3.70 rear with manual 4 speed ( 4th 1 to 1 ) and hate it on the highway. We both need a good overdrive gear, 5 or 6 speed.
I don't like the idea of installing low rear end gears as this takes the fun of acceleartion away, even on a big block.
Good luck on your surge.

Throw in some low profile tires and you got some serious high RPM's on the highway. Going 5 speed next year with the 383 stroker. Sucks getting blown by and think 'If I had one more gear!'
4.11's work real well with a .7 overdrive gear for a final drive of about 2.80 which is damn near perfect for a C3 with an engine that can rev. 6500 in OD with 26" tall tires is just over 170mph.
I would be afraid to take my car up that high unless I tore it down and re-did everything myslef, or at least checked everything. Of course my speedo is on the fritz so I may have come closer than I think.
The tach is in and I took it for a spin. Just over 3000 rpms to keep up with traffic going about 55 - 60. Not an exact figure but that was my guess prior to installing the tach. Definitly need an overdrive. I actually tried to upshift by mistake and there were no more gears left.... :mad
