I know this topic has been done many times, but here goes. I have a small block 72 that I'd like to add a little power to with the following restrictions; Has to be under $700.00 and has to be geared to a non mechanic. What would give me the most bang for the buck, a new carb, intake, etc. Are K&N filters worth the cost? Thanks.
Timing. I know Lars is no longer rebuilding distributors, but I'm sure he'd send you the part numbers for weights and springs, as well as instructions, so you can advance your timing. Minimal cost and dramatic improvement. Usually up to about 15-20 HP. Really wakes the car up.
Hmm, non-mechanic? If modifications and your budget matter, and it sounds like they do, the "do-it-yourself" method may be your best solution. Your education can be free and the results will probably be better than if you spent most of your money paying someone else to do the work than for the improvements. We're not talking rocket science here (push the wrench to the left to loosen, to the right to tighten :)) but you should gain some knowledge (and some confidence) first. In most cases, you will double or triple your "bang for the buck" by doing as much of the work yourself as you can.
If it doesn't get eaten up in outside labor, your $700 will buy you a low restriction exhaust and a cam kit Those two items will provide the most significant power improvement for the money in your case. You're gonna want more after that and your next step will be heads.
