I just got an original am/fm 8trac and CB radio. I will mount it in the original slot. Can I mount my Cd player behind the seat or get a changer? I enjoy my cd's and want to be able to listen but need some suggestions as to how to do it.
im in the same boat. i need a stock radio (or even better, a radio delete plate), but i would like to be able to listen to cds. i was thinking of removing the glove box liner and making some sort of bracket for a cdplayer. it needs to be somewhere where you can control the volume and tracks and whatnot so to me, behind the seats isn't an option. what do you think about that?
You need an FM modulator. This will allow you to feed the signal from a cd changer or a MP3 player to the factory stereo. This is the best you can do with and still use the factory unit. Here is a url that discribes it. Cost is around $30. http://www.hobbytron.net/product581.html
I put in a CD changer that was FM modulated. It is a 6 disk Pioneer unit. Mounted it in the compartment behind the passenger seat. You set the factory radio to a certian FM station and the CD changer plays through the radio. You control the volume with the radio. A small remote control comes with the changer to select the tracks and disk. I wired mine so it lays near the passenger seat. Then when I am not using it I tuck it in between the seat and the console and you can not see it.
I went the reverse route. I took out the original 8-TRack and boxed it up carefully and have it stored away along with the original speakers, all working.
I installed a Kenwood Corvette right in the same slot and stuck a 10-disc changer and Bazooka sub in the rear. If I ever were to have the car judged (doubtful), I could put it all back easily.
Mine is The factory AM-FM-CB with ***** and getting it onto the correct station is not hard. The signal from the changer is very strong so it tunes in very easy. Then I set one of the pushbuttons to that station.
What you could do is get a FM modulated changer and mount it in the back. I have a dedicated 12 disc mounted on a plank of plywood. I cut the plywood to fit back there, mount the changer vertically, and I still have room for the tops. I'm also about to mount my fire extinguisher and speakers to the plywood, so just something to think about if you want to add more stuff, and also not permanent. Just disconnect the changer and pull out the plywood with changer and all and it's back to original.
