Default 1979 fan clutch

I have some problems related to my fan clutch. This is a non air 79. The water pump in there is a stewart stage 3 short pump.

The clutch that was sent to me, has a shorter axle and my original doesn't go on completly. The short clutch does.

What is wrong and what clutch would actualy fit. I suppose the short new one, will be to short causing the fan to run outside the shroud right ? I can't fit it right now, since my body is still not on the car.

I went over several catalogs, but everyone seems to list a different unit or suggest the same clutch for all cars...

The long one pictured is too long for a 79.
The short one looks correct, but doesn't look like a heavy duty clutch.

Just wondering why you went with a Stage 3 instead of Stage 2

You've got the wrong water pump or a clutch designed for the early small diameter shaft pumps.

Diameter of waterpump axle is correct in both cases. The short clutch slides on all the way. The long one doesn't. The long one is the one that came with the car. It's an Delco, so could still be the original. However the hole for the waterpump axle is not deep enough in the long one.

The aftermarket 'short' water pumps do not have the correct distance from the mounting legs on the block to the clutch mounting face. Corvette water pumps are unique in this respect.

You pump should be correct.
The distance from the block mounting surface to the clutch mounting surface should be 5.795" for a small block.
Your short clutch pictured looks correct.

Stewart pump work very well.

Hm, another question, how deep sits the fan in the shroud on an L82 1979 ?
With this short style clutch i guess it would sit half in, half out.

As for the heavy duty. The car doesn't have AC, so i don't think originally it came with a HD clutch.
