Default Interior question....I goofed..please help

We went to a drive up car show last summer. We had just put hanging on the dash one of those tree shaped air fresheners. Vanillaroma the yellow one. Since it was clashing with the dash color so much I decided to temporarily store it on top of the parking brake console under the center arm pad. Forgot about it being there and it baked on in the summer heat. We were able to pull most of it off but there is still this sticky residue on there. We have tried soaking with a wet sponge for days to no avail. Does anyone know of something that will help remove the sticky? Something harsh enough to disolve the gook but not so harsh as to damage the plastic console. Its a brand new console. Thanks in advance.

Try minearal spirits from the hardware store. Should by strong enough to take the glue off but shouldn't harm the plastic. It will leave kind of an oily residue but that will come off with any cleaner.

Seems like a good idea Pete. Mineral spirits...paint thinner right? I got some of that here already. Ill carefully give it a try.

Man.. this is a tough one. That'll learn ya though... cause that goo is tough to remove. While soaking did you use "Very" hot water with some kind of grease dissolving soap? (Dawn dishwashing liquid) Have you tried a diluted solution of your favorite degreaser? I'd test that first on a inconspicuous area first though... sorry, that's all I got for you... good luck :smash:

We have tried very very hot water along with simple green to no avail. I do know one thing that would definatly take it off. Fingernail polish remover. Unfortunatly it would probably desolve the console as well. Looking for something in between. The mineral spirits sounds like its worth a shot. Any other ideas you all have are greatly appreciated.

Make sure it is mineral spirits (which is a paint thinner) and NOT lacquer thinner. Minerial spirits should by mild enough not to damage the plastic.

If the residue is "sticky" I would try "Goo Gone". Its cheap , $2.50, Sold in most grocery stores. It takes glue residue off everything. Its citris based and smells pretty good. I use it everyday in my business .

be careful when using ANY citrus cleaner. it WILL start eating some soft plastics, especially vinyl!!--ruined a jet-ski seat, learning the hard way.

GOod point.......and one I should have brought up. Just wet a cloth and rub gently....don't let the solution "sit and soak".

Try "Skin-So-Soft" by Avon. My wife swears by it and I have used it occasionally for thing like this with good results. At the least, your dash turns out smelling nice and soft as a baby's ...

Rubbing alcohol (Isopropyl). The kind you get at a drug store. I would try it in an inconspicuous spot first but it works great at removing stuff. That is what I use to clean parts right before I paint them. It evaporates very quickly and cleans great. BTW it also take the sticky stuff off of windshields...you know the kind that is left on there from inspection stickers and stuff.

Try the skin-so-soft first. I have heard about using that stuff to and it is probably the safest. After that the goo- gone citrus cleaner. Just don't let it sit and soak.

I could say something about Dogr's use of Avon - but he has access to a bead blaster and I'm in the middle of a restore project!

I've used WD40 for all types of residue removal and it should not hurt the vinyl. Careful not too scrub too hard...

Goo-Gone is great stuff. When I'm out of that I use WD-40.
