Default Stripped bolts on rear brake caliper brackets

The bolt threads on rear brake caliper bracket are stripped and I need to re-drill and re-tap, I think it would be best to go up in size rather
than trying to just re-tap existing thread
Could you please tell me what size drill bit and tap I would need to do this.

Will a larger bolt fit through the mounting hole on the caliper? I would get a helicoil first or a new bracket second.

Helicoil, bolt sizes etc remain correct and unless screwed up the shear is the same as it was before (slightly more in theory)\

Another thought for you; you might be able to find a metric size grade 8 equivalent that is slightly larger than the original St Louis bolt and retap. Although my 68 usually squeals and complains loudly if I try to put anything metric on her.

Hope this might help.

If the threads ON THE BOLT are stripped...
run a 3A size tap thru the bracket hole to remove slivers left inside from the damaged bolt...
then buy a 3A rated bolt which will fit tighter in the threaded bracket.

If the bracket holes are badly stripped...use the next larrger size tap to re=thread the bracket.

Thanks guys, will try first going up one size and re-tapping.

I do have a couple of spare brackets if I have to replace

I did this several years ago when I found one of the holes stripped out. Worked like a charm.

Helicoils for some reason scare people. There is a reason the FAA allows Helicoils, they work and are as strong or stronger than OE when installed properly.
