I want to replace the stock speakers in my '82 vette. I listen to rock, and country. I dont really care about bass I just want my music loud and crisp. Any suggestions?
I dont have any speakers in my doors, just the 4x6? in my dash and 6x9 in the back. I bought a pair of 6x9 a few years ago and the bolt pattern didnt match up
Sounds like you've got a stock system, and while not sure what GM was doing in 82', many C3's used 4x10" 10 ohm speakers, that aren't at all a common item. If a stock head unit, only a few watts/channel, so not doing much jammin' there. Keep in mind most aftermarket auto speakers are 4 ohm, and will probably overload the head unit internal amps. I'm thinking you're really wanting aftermarket power amp/speakers here. Maybe best checking the forums general electronics/audio section, as lot's of knowledge there.
6x9's from Infinity will fit the back, I have them. Also put 4x6 Infinity plate type speakers in the dash, get a small 4 channel amp to go with them is my advice, it helps them cut thru the road noise with the windows down and the tops out. I also added a RF 10" woofer later, and built a box for it. Fits nicely in the back and still room for the tops or luggage, and sounds nice. The woofer takes the load off the full range speakers and they get even clearer.
I have Polk Dxi460 4x6's in the dash & Pioneer TS-G6943R 6x9's in back.
Its nowhere near audiophile quality, but they did fit in the factory locations (the Pioneers took minor tweaking to get them to fit) and I can hear whats on the radio at 70 mph with the windows down.
I still think I need to add a sub though. The bass sounds fine till you start moving and then it seems to sort of dissapear at speed.
If I had AC and drove with the windows up I imagine it would be less of an issue.
polks in the front kenwoods in the back .for me the best thing i did was cut the dash and put in a good stereo.put one in that has a usb port and you can load up xxx numbers of songs and not have to keep all those cds in the car.i mounted my speakers on the side .that way you can put any speaker back there and they are still out of your way.to make the system complete it needs a small sub ,but where?not sure yet.http://vettes.shutterfly.com/#editPictures:albumId=84
I do have an aftermarket head unit I put in with both USB connection and IPOD control which i routed to the glove compartment so i can control my ipod with my head unit. I dont really want to put a box anywhere in the car. I do definitely need to update the speakers in the back and dash.I know its hard to find a 4x6 of high quality but i really dont wanna cut into the dash. Thanks for the suggestions so far guys.
I'm really happy with the Infinity Kappa 462.9cfp plate 4x6s I have in the dash. No cutting, good fit in my 82, 60 watts RMS, 160 peak, good sound even from that not so great location. They are plate type speakers, the woofer and tweeter are separate, and they come with a crossover. Insanely easy to install.
I'm partial to Boston Acoustics so that is what I put in my '73. 4"x6" in the dash and 6.5" in the kick panels. Be advised the Boston 4"x6" speakers are not a direct fit to the dash location. I had to make an adapter bracket to bolt them to the factory location. If you put round speakers in the kick panel location, you'll likely have to modify the pocket. There is a lip that restricts the opening that must be trimmed. I've had Boston 6"x9" speakers in another vehicle and was very impressed with the tight bass they put out.
If you are not running an external amp (driving all the speakers from the head unit), pay attention to the speaker efficiency specs. The greater the efficiency the better the head unit will drive them to acceptable volume levels.
I have Pioneer TS-G6943R 6x9's in back. Its nowhere near audiophile quality, but they did fit in the factory locations (the Pioneers took minor tweaking to get them to fit).
I just ordered these speakers for the back of my 82 from Crutchfield. They had them on sale for $44 with free shipping. Just curious what tweaks you had to make so I don't have to reinvent the wheel. I assume they will need spacers of some kind to clear the tweeters from the stock grills/and or the same for the magnet in the back to clear? Any advice, what you used for the spaces, etc., would be greatly appreciated. Thanks!
