Default '79 fuel sending unit

I want to change the fuel sending unit in my '79 vette. Can the sending unit be taken out without dropping the gas tank? Can it come out through the gas lid hole if I take the lid out of the body? The rim on top of the gas tank that holds the fuel filler neck and connetions that screws into the tank looks very close to the size of the opening of the hole in the body that it would have to come out of. I don't want to take out all the screws and disconnect everything only to find out that it can't fit through the opening. Has anyone done it this way with success?

Yes. You'll need to remove the cover, bezel, gas cap and filler boot. The toughest part will be the removal of the short pieces of hoses that connect the fuel and vapor lines to the sending unit. If they have not been replaced, they are probably brittle so plan on replacing them as well. You'll have to twist the mounting plate so it comes out nearly sideways and the unit will sort of unscrew until its out of the tank. Also get the tank as close to empty as possible and disconnect the battery. I did the fix on my 1978 nearly ten years ago and still registering fuel amount on the fuel gauge.

This article was published in Corvette Enthusiast a few years back and may offer some insights. You may decided you will not need to replace the entire assembly.

I don't know why you are removing it but I assume the gauge in the dash is not working. Before you remove it you may want to do some testing to make sure the problem is in the tank sender. Ground the ohms wire and the tank should go to empty, then remove it and the tank should go to full.

If you force the gauge to zero by grounding the signal wire and delay 15-20 seconds, can you drive the fuel low light to illuminate?

thanks for the reply. Yes, I have done the test on the guage and it works, so I am pretty sure it is the sending unit.

thanks very much. Didn't think about disconnecting the battery, so thanks for that tip too. Hope to get to it soon and not have to worry about checking my gas level with a stick anymore.

I'd say good deal, but this means you have a sender problem and that isn't much fun.... Test the new sender before you install the tank back in... just to be on the safe side.

0 ohms is empty and (aprox.) 90 is full.
