What is it about the L-82 that sets it apart from the L-48. I know it has more horsepower, but why? What parts are different from the L-48 then the L-82. Main reason for asking is becasue I want to keep my L-82 an L-82, but I want to mod it in the future as well. I dont want to change all the things that make it an L-82.
Also, anyone know any good websites that cover 75's? I want LOTS of info on them.
Re: Difference between L-48 and L-82? (Vash the Stampede)
An L82 is a different engine in every way, the block has 4-bolts holding the main bearing caps (L48 has 2), hardened pistons and rods (L48 has forged), hardened pushrods, etc. I think the only thing similar is the gasket set and the oil pan.
Re: Difference between L-48 and L-82? (Vash the Stampede)
The extra horsepower came from a higher lift cam and higher compression. There were several differences but these two are the horsepower reasons. The 73 Spot may show all the internal differences.

Re: Difference between L-48 and L-82? (Vash the Stampede)
Performance wise, the real difference is in the Cam. The L82 cam is basicly the same cam as was used on the 350ci/350hp engine of '69. It also has a half point more compression. The heads have larger valves (2.02/1.60 vs 1.94/1.50) but otherwise are the same as the L48. Intake manifold is the same, exhaust manifold is the same. What makes the L82 a great engine is its internals. Very strong engine with 4-bolt mains, forged steel crank, and alum. impact extruded pistons. Best way to think of the L82 is as a lower compression version of the 350/350hp engine with added emission controles and rated at NET HP rather than GROSS HP.
Thanks for making me feel good about getting an L-82! With it being a stouter engine, I hope it'll last a long time (mine's original -- matching #'s).
And I always figured it had a more aggressive cam -- idle is definitely more lumpy than an L-48...
Re: Difference between L-48 and L-82? (Vash the Stampede)
My L-82 reached about 90K (hard-driven) miles before throwing a rod :cry ....it's a reliable motor for sure. Open up the exhaust a little bit and you'll have a decently quick car as well.
Plus you'll have excellent internals that will allow you to upgrade the power
:smash: and maintain reliability.

L82 cam has more lift & dur ... I've seen where L82 oil pan has different part number than pan for L48 ...maybe same pan ... maybe not ... I've never seen a side-by-side comp. Only a guess, but if different pan maybe L82 has a different oil pump and/or pickup screen too.

The L-82 pan is baffled and uses a windage tray. The L48 pan does not.
The L-82 also gave you :
1. Aluminum valve covers
2. Differently jetted carb
3. Different size exhaust pipe
4. TH400 instead of Th350 as the auto trans for sume years.
5. Larger radiator.
6. Heavy duty fan clutch.
7. Higher rpm tach
from the factory: one had very little power, and one had almost no power :D the differance is that you can strap on a blower and easily change the little power rating of the L-82.
