82 fuel problem

82 fuel problem
I have a 82 that was running great one week ago. I started it up today and it hardly makes it out of the garage. It will not idle and tries to stop running when giving it gas, I can step on the throddle and within 5 seconds it either stops or almost stops running acts like its starving for fuel. Could it be a stopped up fuel filter? Fuel relay or fuel pump. Car is all original with 17k miles. Thanks in advance

Make sure the tank actually has fuel. The 82 tank sender has a habit of showing 1/2 tank when in fact the tank is empty.
With 17K I doubt its a fuel filter or relay,could be the sock in the tank.
One very common problem I've found is the short piece of hose between the fuel pump and metal tube coming up and out of the tank,the hose swells or splits and lets all the fuel be shot back in to the tank rather than sending it forward to the engine.

If it was a relay it wouldn't start at all and if the fuel pump went bad its usually the same story. one othe possible problem could be the fuel regulator is stuck open.

When you turn the key to on do you hear the pump kick in for about 2 seconds...you should hear a buzz from behind you. Followed by that do you hear the injectors buzz....for a second....its the prime pulse.
You need to determie that you have adaquent fuel pressure before you get into other things.

Right after the pump goes on do youhear a sound from the injectors? Same test, turn the key to on and listen for the pump then listen for the injectors they come on right after.

So when you turned the key to on you heard the pump go on? Do not turn the engine over just turn the key to the on position. It should have gone one for a second or two. Is that right?? Listen carfully. It should go one then stop...if it stays one the rubber hose in the tank is leaking and the system is not pressurizing.

Key on, pump pressuries system. Once there is pressure to the TBI's the injectors send a burst of fuel, thats the prime pulse and the funny clicking noise I mention.
Its sounds to me that if you are getting a noise from the pump turning on followed by a hum the pump or rubber hose in the tank is shot. There should be no hum, the hum is the pump crapping out.

Is the hum coming from the rear? Same place as the pump? You shouldn't be getting a hum from the rear. Key on, pump buzzs 2 seconds and thats it. Followed by clicking noise from both injectors for 1-2 seconds.
