Default hurst com plus install

Hi All,

Been a million years since I last posted. I got a ton of help while swapping out the stock 327 for a crate 383 and VBP suspension. I have experienced some light grinding (rattleling) while downshifting under power. Kinda weird it is not the tranny grinding and when I put the clutch in it continues. Not a horrible missed a grear grind but disturbing all the same. Why I didn't replace the shifter with the ENTIRE car pulled apart I'll never no....but I suspect the stock shifter is at fault. I had some isues with it locking in reverse cleaned it etc. Even pulled it out and ground down some of the plates which got it into reverse better.

I figured it is time to just replaced the shifter. After pouring through the back posts I figured I'd get the hurst comp plus. Checking out the diagrams on the hurst site showed the slight bent offset I see have troubled others. I just ordered mine today so I will check that first. I plan on doing a preliminary look at the old shifter and start pulling out the boot and consule stuff. Trying to bench as much as possible before the install.

Soooo here is the big question. I have access to a lift (I have done the stock one a few times on my back with the car on jack stands). The lift is a friends house about an hour away. So if I commit it is an all in affair. I have seen some say this is a straight forward swap and about two hours on the lift. Others seem to have a ton of adjustment issues. What pitfalls might I expect? Once I leave my house with the equipment I am "all in". Or it is an expensive cab ride back. And my local Vette shop (who I think highly of) says it should be about 2 hours an 200 bucks. Like all of us I'd prefer not to pay - more importantly I want to understand the mechanics of the shifter for future adjustments, cleaning and maintainence.

Any tips, advice, warnings and war stories would be much appreciated. I have been avoiding driving the car partially due to the hot summer but with fall around the corner....

BTW - I have 68 ragtop with stock tranny bolted to a 383 motor. I do realize my tranny is different from the 69's with threaded studs for the rods to mount on. I am hoping this isn't too horribly different than pulling the original. Also I am hoping standing under it and the added clearance will make the job easier.

Many thanks in advance.

Jim
