Long story short. I replaced my functioning non stock water pump on my 70 with a restored original pump. After replacing the pump the car immediately developed a leak from the heater core area. What about changing a water pump could lead to a heater core leak? Or is it just a coincidence or something else?

Same thing happened to me, but the other way around. My 70 had a heater core leak in fall one year. Replaced it and then in spring the water pump went. I think mine was coincidence.

Even more annoying when you have the coolant lead on to the floor, pull the heater core, test it and it at the core seems seems OK so you re-install it (thinking that it was the hose connecting it that was weeping - and then it develops the leak again 6 months later - so you DO replace the core (and its fine now!)

If you changed the heater hoses at the same time you probably cracked the heater core inlets, very easy to do. Its best to razor blade them off.

I took the car to a shop because one tof the water pump bolts broke. The heater hoses were not replaced. I can't see any leakage around the hose inlets or the heater box, but there is coolant leaking from underneath and into the passanger side foot well. The leak stops when the car is cold.

If you do change the core, TEST the new one for leaks first before putting it in.
