Has anyone ever had the alignment shims on the upper control arm just fall out and disappear? Coming back from the cruisin the other night I noticed an odd clunk after hard braking.. After searching I found all the shims were gone and a decent amount of space where they should go. The nuts didnt turn to easily so I find it hard that they just backed off.. Any ideas or has this happened to anyone?
I did have the same thing happen to my 73 Trans Am. Simular upper control arm set up. I never figured out how they fell out. Just figured the bolts loosened during some spirited driving. They only have to loosen a little to let the shims rattle out while driving.
Alright well I am really glad I at least know this has happened to someone else now. Also what would you do to get it to the alignment shop. leave the nuts where they are so the bar rest against them or tightned the nuts all the way and take it to the shop which is only about 3 miles away.
probably depends on how loose they are. The more play you have the stronger the shaft will clunk against the support. May be worth tightening for the ride.
Pretty common thing to happen, alignment guy just didn't get the nuts tight enough.
Count the shims, glue them ,tape them whatever it takes in case they loosen up you won't have to pay again for alignment.

The shims are gone, Rog. Now Dante could find some old school type shims and stuff them in, then tighten the nuts. But I'd think if the nuts backed off, adding in shims to fill in the available space wouldn't get the alignment to where it needs to be.
If it was me, I'd replace the bolts, nuts and shim pack with new stuff, then have an alignment done by a shop who still knows how to work on C3 Vettes. I'd find some spacers to stuff in the widest gaps to keep the upper control shaft from knocking around on the trip to the alignment shop.
