Re: rear leaf spring replacement..need opinions (razz1980)
I just replaced/rebuilt the whole rearend. I replaced with a 7 leaf steel spring which is what was on there, (I am told the 9 leaf ride softer,) and monroe gas shocks. The spring and shocks cost about $160 and could be done easily on a Saturday. I know there are better set-ups, but the spring alone would cost more. If $$ is a concern I believe the stock set-up with gas shocks is adequate. It definately rides better than the worn out set that was on there.

Replacement is really simple but a little dangerous. Shock replacement is easier. I composite spring is one of the best improvements you can make. It will be quieter, ride much smoother (standard rate) and handle better than the stock steel spring. Do a search on http://www.ncrs.org (archives) for tips on spring replacement so you don't snap the ears off of the differential cover. Major headaches when this happens.. The spring must not be "drawn" into pace by the mount bolts or this can and does happen. I know some of you are lucky but it is a real issue.
