Default rear leaf spring replacement..need opinions

well the old vettes rear leaf spring is sitting kinda flat and the rides not that sweet so i decieded to replace it..i would like a smoother ride but still be able to take it down the drag strip..money is a big concern so i would like to find a good inexpensive set-up..now composite spring from vette brakes are mentioned here alot..what are my other choices, what lbs. should i get..do i need to replace my shocks also..if so what are a good inexpensive set that compliment the new spring..HOW HARD is the spring replacement and the shock replacement if that is also needed..i know this has been covered before but there is always so many different opinions on the subject..renember price is a major concern for me so no high priced set-up opinions please it will just depress me :jester

I just replaced/rebuilt the whole rearend. I replaced with a 7 leaf steel spring which is what was on there, (I am told the 9 leaf ride softer,) and monroe gas shocks. The spring and shocks cost about $160 and could be done easily on a Saturday. I know there are better set-ups, but the spring alone would cost more. If $$ is a concern I believe the stock set-up with gas shocks is adequate. It definately rides better than the worn out set that was on there.

Replacement is really simple but a little dangerous. Shock replacement is easier. I composite spring is one of the best improvements you can make. It will be quieter, ride much smoother (standard rate) and handle better than the stock steel spring. Do a search on http://www.ncrs.org (archives) for tips on spring replacement so you don't snap the ears off of the differential cover. Major headaches when this happens.. The spring must not be "drawn" into pace by the mount bolts or this can and does happen. I know some of you are lucky but it is a real issue.
