How much does a frame weigh? Well....
I helped fellow forum member Darcy Bast move out of his place this weekend in another city a couple of hours away. This was a perfect oppurtunity to stop by Paso's to talk Vette's. We wanted to put the question about frame weights to rest so...
We pulled a bare frame from stroage to try and get an answer.
Here's Darcy Bast and Paso setting the frame on an official scale.
Paso setting up the scale. What will it weigh?
Don't drop that frame Darcy!
And.....a bare 77 (It is a 77, right Paul?) frame weighs in at 276 pounds.
With conrtol arms and crossmembers it weighed in at 371 pounds. Add a steering box and you'd get 387 pounds.

Thanks for the info Stingy! My frame also had the three piece front extension attached , along with the front and rear control arms and all the crossmembers, so I am guessing that my frame was in the 400+ LBS area.

Cool! So if you used aluminum control arms, maybe make an alloy crossmember you could save close to 60-70 pounds... Hmmm better power/weight ratio = go faster = very good!

Wow, we are Conans!!!
A buddy and me we moved the frame about 300 yards by carrying this thing.
It was a 77 frame also - man, I feel like a bear - look a hair is growing on my chest!!! :lol: :lol: :lol:

It was alot easier to lift than I had thought. Two people is all that's needed to move one around.

Then where the heck does the 3,000lbs come from? The engine can't weigh much more than 1,000lbs including tranny. Drive shaft perhaps 100, differential maybe 80 or so. The fiberglass body can't weigh any more than 100. Are the wheels filled with lead?

Corvette bodies are HEAVY. Some friends and I (none of us are small guys) decided a Corvette body couldn't be that heavy, so 4 of us should be able to lift it off of the frame easy enough. Don't kid yourself, 4 guys can't lift a corvette body without doing permanent body damage........to the guys lifting. :D
